Bayern Munich’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, has publicly declared his steadfast support for Sadio Mane following the Senegalese striker’s suspension due to an altercation with his fellow teammate Leroy Sane that led to the latter’s injury.
Mane, aged 31, was not included in the lineup for the Hoffenheim match due to misconduct arising from the disagreement with Sane, which resulted in a bloody lip for the latter.
The incident took place after the 3-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester City, although Tuchel himself did not witness the altercation.
During a press conference, Tuchel spoke up in defense of Mane, stating that he was the player’s first lawyer and defender. Tuchel went on to reveal that he has known Mane for a long time and is familiar with his social circle.
Tuchel emphasized that Mane had apologized to all involved parties and that he had the coach’s full support both before and after the incident.
Moreover, Tuchel acknowledged that everyone is prone to making mistakes and that the team atmosphere remained stable despite the incident.
“I am his first lawyer and his first defender. I’ve known him for so long and I know his entourage. He has my full support. He had that before and he still has it after this mistake that he has made. Everyone has the right to make a mistake,” Tuchel affirmed.
The Athletic reports that tensions had already been brewing before the altercation occurred. A heated on-field discussion broke out following a failed attacking move during the game against Manchester City.
Since Mane’s return from injury, he has been under the watchful eye, and Bayern’s form has been fluctuating at times. The striker has scored 11 goals in 32 appearances during his first season with Bayern. However, despite the incident, Tuchel remains optimistic, suggesting that the altercation might have a cleansing effect on the team.
Furthermore, Bayern’s management has revealed that the case has been considered closed after Leroy Sane requested that they not sack Mane. However, there are rumors that Bayern is contemplating selling Mane after the alleged punch to Sane.
